After years of filings, counterfilings, and differences as intractable as the Hatfields and the McCoys, Prometheus and large translator network Educational Media Foundation (EMF) have come to an understanding about the future status of translators and low power FM (LPFM) stations. Translators are the mini-stations that repeat the signals of other stations, often in chains over long distances. EMF is the third largest applicant for non-commercial FCC translator licenses, with over 800 applications in the 2003 filing window.

Congratulations to Radio Comunitaria Vieques FM (RCV-FM) in Puerto Rico, a project of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques (CRDV), who received their FCC construction permit and are working hard to get on the air. RCV-FM is a regional project that includes the two island municipalities of Puerto Rico – Culebra and Vieques – and the towns of Ceiba and Naguabo on the main island.

Internet streaming radio may not broadcast radio waves, but it is still a great way to reach listeners. If you're already on the air as an FM or AM radio station, you can use internet streaming to reach listeners outside of your normal coverage area or to provide additional content that won't fit into your on-air schedule.

It's been nearly a month since Prometheus concluded our 5-week long Making Waves: Transmitting Popular Power outreach tour.

The Idaho Community Action Network (ICAN) applied for a full power non-commercial FM license back in 2007, and in March 2010 ICAN received their construction permit and can start building their new radio station!

As you will see in this Broadcast, April has been an action packed month. Right now we are in Florida organizing against media consolidation, in DC fighting to pass the Local Community Radio Act, and traveling across the South and South West sharing the power of radio. Your support allows a small organization like Prometheus to have national impact. Please make a donation today – any amount helps!

On March 16th, the Prometheus Radio Project and Palabra Radio set out on a cross-country tour called Making Waves: Transmitting Popular Power. Over past three weeks, we have facilitated nearly 20 workshops in English and Spanish with grassroots organizations interested in exploring radio as a tool for social justice organizing. We’re documenting the tour on our blog, uploading stories, interviews, photos and videos.

This spring and summer, Prometheus will be conducting massive outreach to connect social justice organizations to participatory radio. We have already embarked on a 5 week, 12 state tour and are preparing to travel to major national convergences such as the Allied Media Conference and the US Social Forum. Please help us to continue this work by becoming a Sustaining Funder.

Here in Philadelphia over a yard of snow has been dumped on us this winter, but Prometheus has been plowing ahead in the fight to free the airwaves. What keeps us going are our Sustaining Funders. Please become a monthly donor so we can continue our work!

Help Prometheus enter this new decade strong by becoming a Sustaining Funder! Small donations of $50, $25, and $10 a month go a long way in amplifying Prometheus's support of community-powered radio!
