Sobriety Through Outpatient - Production and Streaming Studio
Sobriety Through Outpatient, Inc. is a Philadelphia-based mental health and substance abuse treatment and therapy group. They wanted a Production studio in which they could produce audio pieces around the subjects of therapy for substance abuse. They are looking to create content that they can distribute and exchange with other treatment centers around the country, as well as use the studio itself for therapeutic means.
The project was completed in late September of 2008. The work was performed by then Prometheus staff Andy Gunn, and then Prometheus intern Maka Muñoz. It only took three days of construction time, with two days of training time afterwards.
The studio build attracted a lot of attention in the STOP office - frequently people would stop by to chat about what was going on. Many folks had a lot of ideas about what the studio could be used for. People were most excited about the idea of telling their stories - as people suffering from addiction. It sounded very much like folks were frustrated feeling dismissed, as though their addiction made their opinions less valuable, or that they were just a problem and not a person. Now that they have the resource of the studio, we hope that they can get their stories down, and make them available for people all over the country to download and listen - hopefully helping and strengthening people with their stories.
Everyone at STOP was very excited when we finished construction, and began training. All in all, we trained about 10 people to use the studio, to do a "live set" for streaming on the web, and also to record materials and edit them together for later use. It took two days, but in the end people were already recording and putting their stories and ideas "on tape".
